Antigone Rising Profile by MJ Krey
Antigone Rising is a NYC-based band comprised of five women who are well-acquainted with both extremes of the music industry spectrum. Sisters Kristen and Cathy Henderson founded the band in the mid- 90s when they were just out of college and living in the West Village. They are a very versatile band, seeming equally at home with ground-shaking rockers or delicate ballads.
Antigone Rising blossoms in that over-the-top atmosphere, adhering more to arena rock excitement than the head down, keep playing philosophy of many of Antigone's contemporaries. They rock harder than any emo punk band, and although they're from New York, they manage to avoid copycat new, generic rock (read: Strokes, Hives ) territory.
When you go to an AR show, it becomes clear why many of their fans have seen them dozens of times. They have a reputation for dynamic live shows, having garnered large crowds and intense industry attention at major events like SXSW as well as opening for some of the biggest names in the music industry like the Rolling Stones, Rob Thomas, and Aerosmith. Conversations between the band and audience have become an essential ingredient in the Antigone Rising art form, with Lead Singer Cassidy generously playing the role of host and ambassador.
The current line up for the band is: Cassidy - vocals, Cathy Henderson - lead guitar, Kristen Henderson - rhythm guitar, Jen Zielenbach - bass guitar, and Dena Tauriello - drums and percussion.
Whether it's a hard-rocking song or a soulful ballad, the band's perfect harmonies, excellent musicianship and powerful stage presence captivate and electrify the audience. Their unique music is a superb blend of the Eagles, Led Zeppelin, and pop music.
