Billy Joel Tickets - We Didn't Start the Fire the One and Only Billy Joel by Brent Warnken

Billy Joel won the affection of history teachers and students across America when he released the song "We Didn't Start the Fire" in 1989. The song is very simple, merely a list of historic events and persons. But it is so cleverly compacted together that it makes a truly enjoyable, going through different periods of history in order to illustrate the picture of what has shaped the world and the modern mind. The verses, which are organized in groups of eight lines, are interrupted by the chorus "We didn't start the fire/It was always burning/Since the world's been turning/We didn't start the fire/No we didn't light it/But we tried to fight it."

The story behind "We Didn't Start the Fire" is that Billy Joel had, at one time, had the ambition of becoming a history teacher, but dropped out of school. As a history buff that had never been able to finish high school, due to his arduous performance schedule, the artist had still managed to maintain his interest in the subject. The song was inspired when he met a young man soon after he had turned 40, and incidentally that same young man had just celebrated his 20th birthday. The young man was deeply saddened by all the crises in the world, and felt that it must have been much better to be born in the '50s, when Joel was. The songwriter reminded him that there were many crises that arose in the '50s, just as much in the '80s, and that it was a theme that ran through all of history. During their discussion Joel became inspired to write "We Didn't Start the Fire."

Since his conversation, and the subsequent creation and release of the song, Billy Joel's name has become synonymous with "We Didn't Start the Fire." The song rose to number one on The Billboard Hot 100 that year, but it was not the most awarded or the most popular song he ever wrote. That honor goes to "Just the Way You Are" a song that is, perhaps, the most awarded song of his career, receiving both Record of the Year and Song of the Year/New Song of the Year at the Grammy Awards in 1978. His album 52nd Street was his biggest winning album, receiving the awards for Album of the Year and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance of the year in 1979. Gass Houses was another Grammy winner in 1980, receiving Best Male Rock Vocal Performance that year.

Throughout his lifetime Joel has been one of the biggest selling and most popular artists of his day, and has had several of his albums go multi-platinum with The Stranger eventually becoming certified multiplatinum a full six times. Billy Joel tickets are now available online, a leading site for fan-to-fan ticket sales.
