Fascinating Ayers Rock Hotels

by David H. Urmann

Ayers Rock is a wonderful site to behold. For this reason, the area has become a major tourist destination that never fails to amuse tourists and guests. Although there are no Ayers Rock hotels within the Uluru Tjuta National Park, there are numerous Ayers Rock accommodations in nearby Yulara.

Ayers Rock Facts

Ayers Rock is the former name given to the world-famous Uluru which is a massive rock formation. This rock formation can be seen at a park called the Uluru Tjuta National Park. This park is located within the south portion of Australia's Northern Territory. This site is also a part of the so-called Red Center of the Australian continent.

The national park of Uluru Tjuta is considered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Along with the great Ayers Rock, the Olgas or the Kata Tjuta which is a range of numerous rock domes is also a famous tourist attraction in Australia.

The Anangu people consider the Uluru or Ayers Rock as well as Kata Tjuta or Olgas as sacred places. The Anangu people are the Aboriginal tribes that have lived and settled in Australia thousands of years ago. In the year 1895, the government of Australia had formally returned the control of the area to the Anangu people under one condition that the land must be jointly managed by both the Australian parks and management services as well as the Anangu people.

Visitors will notice the efforts made throughout the area in order to encourage and include respect for the Anangu people's perspective of their land. Some portions of the Olgas or the Kata Tjuta are considered off-limits. Climbing Ayers Rock or the Uluru is strongly discouraged by the officials as a form of respect to the Anangu people. There are also some areas around the Ayers Rock's base that are off limits for photography though there are basically no other similar problems throughout the park.

Flora and Fauna at Ayers Rock

The park where Ayers Rock is located have 2 main features. The park protects numerous plant species as well as 72 reptile species and 24 mammal species. In order to protect the plant and animal life near the Ayers Rock, off-road access away from Kata Tjuta and Uluru are not allowed.

Ayers Rock Climate

During the months of January and December, the temperature in and around neighboring areas in Ayers Rock can be a bit hot. Some areas near Ayers Rock may be close during this season for the tourists' safety. On the other hand, the months of July, September and August offer a temperate climate though it is still warm enough and it is expected that people will sweat during the mid-day.

Ayers Rock Hotels

There is no hotel accommodation within the park or anywhere significantly near Ayers Rock. There is also a no camping policy within the rock boundaries so as to observe and pay their respect to the Anangu people. There are accommodations near Ayers Rock that range from 5-star to simple camping accommodations at Yulara which is a popular village resort just outside the Uluru Tjuta National Park.

Curtin Springs Station This is about an hour away from Ayers Rock. The site offers free powered camping and about 25 US dollars per night for powered areas. The management also charges 2.50 US dollars for showers. Travelers have the option to stay along the bush camp but natives do not recommend this.
